Jess Scrivener

Hello, I’m Jess, a passionate socialist designer committed to creating designs that spark change through interactive and engaging visuals. At Reading, I’ve developed a versatile skill set through independent study and a comprehensive curriculum, applicable across platforms from illustrations to advanced editorial work and UX design. I particularly enjoy creating hand drawn illustrations, which infuse my work with a unique visual style and allow for full customisation, resulting in engaging and distinctive designs. My design process is driven by thorough research, producing impactful designs only after in-depth analysis of the topic, its users, and competitors. This deep understanding not only helps me connect with my audience but also enables my designs to evolve and adapt to changing needs.

Different by Design

Real Jobs

This Zine is a part of the “Different by Design” project, which is being conducted by a select group of students within the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading. It is one of four unique Zines that were created based on extensive research into the various challenges that students are encountering at our university. My Zine focuses on menstrual health in universities. I used a comic book style with hand drawn illustrations to highlight this often overlooked issue and its pain. Overseeing the project involved research, writing, designing, illustrating, and hand-producing and folding each Zine. It uses a traditional Zine fold with 8 panels but double sided. The first side presents research findings and discusses the impact on students, while the reverse side illustrates the pain and reality faced by those with menstrual health challenges.

We produce two annual volumes: a summer issue focusing on outdoor activities for mental health, an active lifestyle, and screen breaks, and an autumnal issue highlighting indoor hobbies to combat seasonal depression and provide breaks from screens. We offer a variety of hobbies for solo, group, and date activities. We understand the ease of screen-dominated routines and encourage readers to rediscover simple pleasures. Whether it’s creative projects or mindful outdoor activities, we aim to inspire, comfort, and provide ideas for everyday life. This issue, Outdoor Hours, celebrates hobbies that draw us outside and inspire us to reconnect with nature.
